Shifty

"Shifty" By Chuck Yeager

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy

Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st

Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the

History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10

episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't

know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having

trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was

at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle," the symbol of

the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne

or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the

101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served,

and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so,

and was in until sometime in 1945 ..." at which point my heart

skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training

jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into  Normandy . . . do you know

where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped.

I told him "yes, I know exactly where Normandy is, and I know what

D-Day was." At that point he said "I also made a second jump into

Holland , into Arnhem ." I was standing with a genuine war hero ...

and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of

D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from  France , and he said

"Yes... And it 's real sad because, these days, so few of the guys are

left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart

was in my throat and I didn't know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in

coach while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to

get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came

forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have

it, that I'd take his in coach.

He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are

still some who remember what we did and who still care is enough to

make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it.

And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on Jan. l7 after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.

No big event in  Staples   Center .

No wall-to-wall, back-to-back 24x7 news coverage.

No weeping fans on television.

And that's not right!

Let's give Shifty his own memorial service, online, in our own quiet way.

Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

this is an amazing email i received. it brought tears to my eyes and really made me think about life, death, and true heros. i was asked to pass on shifty's memory and honor it and this is how i hope i will. every one who visits this site should know shifty's story and pass it one. like the message says, we owe it to him and all the other amazing solderers of America. i did not wright this massage nor wish to take credit for it. i'm simply passing on a story that should be told. i ask that you email this to everyone everywhere and anyone anywhere.

was it a comedy or an action film? beets me! i didn't really like the movie. i'd had high hopes for it and lets just say c.a. did not live up to them! it was cheesy and cliché. not that good or exiting, either. my fav part was when this kid~ who looked suspiciously like mini ron wesly~ fell of a bridge and cap was about to jump in after him but the kid says, "no im ok! i can swim, see?!" i half expected bucky to pop up out of the snow after falling off a train and go, "its ok! im alive! im ok!" no such luke of bucky, though. the villain~ who i believe is called red skull~ looked like a sunburned voldamort. what sunscreen dose good ol' voldy use any way? spf 500?its gotta be some pretty powerful stuff to keep his skin that white! lol. wow, that was off topic! any who.... the movie sucked, hands down. it was soppily thrown together. i don't think they should do a sequel. the plot lacked depth and intrigue. it was boring, slow, and even the action parts put me to sleep. ill admit that the climax almost made me cry, though! *sob sob!* jk. it takes more then that to make me cry! try killing the main character... oh wait, they kinda did... oops! too late for a spoiler alert! haha! hears a tip: don't see caption America! it sucked! i cannot stress that enough! don't wast your money and time! go see something good and at least half way decent like cowboys and aliens or even midnight in paris! i cant figure out how to get off bold! i think i broke it again! haha

you might have noticed the changes on my blog. first: i changed the style. i also added a bunch of new widgets on this page. my kitty, in the corner, has not been given a name yet so i'm opened to suggestions. and the 'digg' button is basically a 'like' button. tell me what you think of the new changes and what you want different. feel free to 'digg' me! hahaha! also recommend books and movies for me to review! love ya'll!

cowboys and aliens

yee-haw! (did i spell that right?) cowboys and aliens was a movie i had low expectations for. it seemed that a western would clash with the modern taste of sy-fy flicks. boy, was i wrong! the two types blend together in a scary, sexy, exhilarating, and bloody story. the alines were, in my opinion, scary as hell- but not to the point were you cant bare to look at the screen at all. i snuck a glance every now and then until i was no longer shocked and horrified by there appearance. my dad screamed- actually screamed!- when one jumped out and ripped a guys head off. ill admit that the stomach hands were a bit cliché. it was all together a fabulous tale of the ol' west. the abnisya (no clue how to spell that word) was a nice, flavorful twist. and was i the only one who noticed the indian jones hat reference!??! the guy falls off a space ship in to a river his hat is the first thing to surface. when he was running from and exploding spaceship he drops his hat, shouts: wait i dropped my hat!, then backtracks to pick it up. i was laughing so hard the people behind me asked what was so funny. i felt bad for the min characters wife, though. i won't say why! my lisp are sealed! ;) you'll have to see the movie to know the rest!

this book sires is the definition of sappy. there is hardly any action or thrills. the font color is disorienting, i prefer black instead of red, thank you very much! its a sweet love story, but the ending was predictable like all love stories, i mean, come on people! we all knew that grace and sam would end up together! this may just be because i hate lovey-dovey stuff. if you like that then this book is for you, but if your like me you'll be better off searching an author like james patterson. <3! all in all it was well written and laid out nicely, but where was the excitement? the thrills? the edge-of-your-seat-madness we all crave? grace and Sam's relationship got old in book two, heck! i was sick of them in book one! i have no idea why i kept on reading it.... but i'll admit that i didn't see grace turning in to a wolf! i did get a lode of heart-ache and sadness when sam turned wolf and the author convinced us it was permeant. and you get all warm and fuzzy when he comes back for her. but the book could have had more thrills, not necessarily a classic-horror-slasher-werewolf-story, but the same story with some adrenalin kicks here and there! good book, just not my style!

HP and the deathly hallows pt 2!

i love the HP sires and i'm sure you do to. i'm happy/sad that its over. they did an awesome job on the movie. the special-effects blew my mind, literally! hahaha! a girl dressed up as harry and dyed her hair rainbow for the show- and i wasn't even at the midnight showing/premier!!! i walked in to the theater and shouted, "EXPRECTO-PATRONUM!!!" (i think i spelled that semi-close to correct!) i fell in love with the movie, although i was a bit disappointed that they didn't go in to dumbuldor's sister. his brother said something about him killing her. for though of you how didn't read the book hears the story: so dumbuldor's lil' sis was a squib (aka: non-magic person born from a magic bloodline) she had some mental problem and wouldn't eat unless dombuldor was there. he got in some fight with his friend and she jumped in the way of a curse to save Dumbuldor, but she couldn't block it. so she died and his brother punched big d in the nose and broke his nose. ok all done with the left-out-recap. ok, love you all! night!!!

oh my freaking god! did every one see the primer of alphas las night!? A-MAZ-ING! love it!!! i love, "time to kill, pull the trigger!" i could defiantly see nina and hicks becoming a couple. <3! what did nina mean when she was talking to Dr. Rosalin (is that his name?) about hick when he said there was nothing they could do for him she responded, "but you did it for me? is it really that different?" what did nina do that was as horrible as killing someone?! i fell in love with this show intently. greg reminds me of my favorite character from another show called flashforward, so i totally love him! <3! i hope this show will last a long, LONG time!

book news: maximum ride and forever

forever: it comes out tomorrow! i'll review as soon as i finnish!

maximum ride: the title has been announced! its going to be called: NEVERMORE! some are saying that the series has been dragged on too long. i feel that if jp had left out the final warning and max it would have saved the sires from some major point loss.i expect the book to be vary long, jp has some loss ends to tie! what happened to: dr. brig dower being a spy, mr. chu, dr. ter bochet, the school, angel having a voice in her head, max's voice in her head, there expiration dates, there parents, dr. hagindaiz (cant remember his name, only his nick name), the spider ninjas, the brain-on-a-stick, the apocalypse, ella, sam from schools out forever possibly being an eraser, and itex!!! i mean he's leaving us HANGING!!! come on! its like he tied a rope around my neck and told me to jump! gimme some answers!!!!

HAPPY 4TH!!! I'M IN MONTEREY!!! Unfortunate the fireworks were canceled do to buget cuts and wether :( boo! no fireworks for me!!! shame, i love how the ground vibrates and the sky explodes with color. my day consisteed of a LONG drive though a beautiful country side full of vineyards and wheat fields. i love long drives so it was nice. in the car i watched season of the witch... again. so worth it! i love that movie with all my <3!!! i went to an amazing restrunt with my family, it was made completely of glass!!! ( ; i hope you all had the rockn' 4th i did not. the highlight of my day was when i almost fell out my hotel window; long story.... and when i drove past wht apperd to be eather a white body badg or a sheep on the side of the rode. any-who:
